To Do for May 20 (Cup of Jo)

One billion seconds

This weekend, my brother Nick emailed my twin sister and me to congratulate us for reaching exactly one billion seconds! A billion seconds, he told us, equals 31 years, 259 days, 1 hour, 46 minutes and 40 seconds. I love how, true to form, Nick adjusted for daylight savings, leap years and time zones. :)
P.S. Can you guess how long one million seconds is? Answer in the comments below...

Cupcake Ideas...(Hither and Thither) 11 Jun 2010 - Cupcakes 4 Adults

Loving lemon

This cupcake looks wonderful. Sort of elegant, right?
I've been really drawn to anything involving lemon curd lately, so I might file these away under "Try."

I found this on the very lovely Ming Makes Cupcakes.
She has some fantastic flavor ideas! Flourless chocolate and beet, anyone?

I might have to work in some baking next week. Right now, however, I'm looking forward to the weekend. Aron has both Saturday and Sunday off and, tonight, we're headed to a fancy dinner to celebrate his chief residents. I'm looking forward to putting on a party dress.

 Have a great weekend!

Roman Holiday

Sometimes, when we're traveling, Ashley and I dream up other possibles lives we could lead. I rather liked the one Ashley told me about, wherein we live in Rome, and she starts a small business called Roman Holiday which rents cars like these:

and Vespas like this one:

And we'll have fabulous European adventures together.

Pretty good right?!

DIY Wedding Hair: A So-Chic Side Chignon (Glamour) Oct 2010

Got long, relatively straight hair you want to put up for your wedding day (or for bridesmaid duty)? Here's the how-to for a soft, wavy side chignon.
This idea comes to us from Naeemah Carre, bridal specialist at Blow, The New York Blow Dry Bar.
0422-diy_wedding_hair_long_2_we.jpg
1. Start by curling the hair with a 1-inch curling iron. Spray each section before you curl it. Curl the sides away from face and the top sections back, pinning each ringlet to your scalp as you go. Let these pincurls cool.
2. Tease the hair at the crown and on the side where you'll wear your chignon. "This creates not only volume but a base for your chignon so that your pins have something to hold onto, ensuring that your style lasts all night," Naeemah notes.

3. Begin forming the side chignon by bringing hair towards one side and securing with two bobby pins, creating an X. This ensures that your pins are nice and secure. Then pick up small sections and pin very naturally to create a loose, romantic texture.
4. Use the pointed end of a comb to lift hair at your crown and add more volume where desired (if you want more). Spray with strong-hold hairspray.
The finished result:

Do you guys like the side-chignon look for weddings? I think it's so pretty, since you can glimpse more of the hair from the front as well as the back.
Do you think you could create this updo on your own? How many of you long-haired ladies are confident about your DIY updo skills? Would you rather just dish out cash to have someone else put your hair back for your wedding or for b-maid duty?

Signet wedding ring

Wouldn't a signet ring make a romantic wedding ring? If you take your husband's last name, it would show off your lovely new initials!

Actually, I'm curious: Will you (or did you) take your husband's last name? I kept my name, and only a handful of my friends have changed theirs. What will you do? Do you like the sound of your name with his last name?

Vacation Fantasy: Sardinia

New York has been freezing this week; it almost feels like winter. So I've been drooling over these photos of Sardinia, where Aron and Ashley just went on vacation. They rented a boat (awesome!) and motored up to hidden beaches. Aren't their photos amazing?
P.S. Random fun fact: Did you know that Sardinia has one of the highest percentages of people who live to be over 100 years old?

What I'd Like to Do in NYC...(Hither and Thither) 14 Jun 2010

Thank you for three lovely years, New York!

Three years ago last Saturday, Aron and I drove to New York--arriving smack-dab in the middle of Times Square in our huge moving truck--and began making our home here. We had been married just weeks prior.
I thought we should celebrate this past weekend by watching the 1967-movie Barefoot in the Park.

Have you ever seen it? A pre-Sundance Kid Robert Redford and a pre-Barbarella Jane Fonda--who are both very young and gorgeous here--check out of their honeymoon suite at the Plaza and move into a tiny walkup apartment in the village. It's all very light and sitcom-like, but I love Neil Simon's dialogue. And I love how their building is filled with these crazy characters and think of it when I get in the elevator with some of my favorite character-neighbors (the twin-couple in matching headphones; the 80-year-man covered head-to-toe in tattoos, face and all; the little-old-lady who writes threatening letters to noisy contractors and pastes them on her door; or the dog who is afraid of the slippery lobby floor).

Having been together for nearly seven happy years by the time we were married, Aron and I didn't relate to their shock at getting to know one another as newlyweds, but we did suffer some culture-shock when we first moved to the city. And it was fun to reminisce and marvel at how much has changed in that relationship. We definitely had a few "What have we done?" moments in our first six months--particularly after our, ahem, honeymoon with the city ended. It's almost impossible to believe! These days, we find our fondness for New York does nothing but grow. Happy Anniversary, New York!

What I'd Like to See in NYC...(Hither & Thither-23 Aug 2010)

A gentleman's weekend

One can't help but sense fall's approach. The nights are growing shorter and cooler and stores' windows are filled with sweaters and school supplies. While part of me looks forward to the change of season, I am sad to think that summer is nearly over. One of the joys of my summer is the publishing tradition of the long weekend. During the months between Memorial Day and Labor Day, we get every other Friday off (or the option to work half-days every week)--a holdover from a time when gentlemen in publishing were all wealthy and needed to leave town early to travel to their weekend estates.

No estate for me, but I'm grateful for the tradition nonetheless--especially when it makes it possible for me to spend the day visiting with a good friend who is passing through town. Here are some scenes from the (extended) weekend!

Highlights: ten-mile strolls and Big Bambú, bikes on car-free avenues, meals with friends, hipsters and Assyrian palaces at the Met, ducking out of passing showers for Oysters, tomatoes and corn and eating outside, Italian Ice and--it's about time--An Education.

Today is Aron's father's birthday. Happy Birthday, John!
